Earlier Collages: 2014-2017
These collages are made traditionally with paper, scissors and glue. Drawing from sources as diverse as vintage magazines, art history books, auction catalogs, crafting books, and found photos, I play with shapes, colors, scale and textures not to tell a story but to infer a fragmented narrative. There are well over 100 collages in this series inspired by, and often paired with, selection of poems by Sappho, the Greek lyric poet who lived during the 6th century BC.
I feel a great connection to Sappho's sensual and melodic writing. She wrote of love, yearning, reflection and, in the recovered fragments of her thoughts, I see a similarity to the bits ad pieces of shapes, colors, and texture in my own art work. These collages are purposely abstracted, pared down just enough to suggest an open-ended narrative where viewers can extrapolate their own meanings.
